A massive German techno music festival turned tragic Saturday when 19 people were killed and at least 340 more injured during a bizarre stampede inside a pedestrian tunnel. The annual Love Parade continued despite the deaths, with authorities fearing a cancellation might incite chaos and panic in the crowd of 1.4 million fans.
The fatal crush began as police tried to keep thousands of ravers from entering the jam-packed parade grounds in Duisberg, Germany.
Tunnel blocked by police
We’ve been going to the Love Parade for years and the first thing we noticed in Duisburg were thousands of people trying to get to the main stage. There was only one entrance and everyone tried to get in. In Berlin the people kept moving all day and you never had to stand in line. In Duisburg we stood in line (in the video @ 2.22) for 40 minutes and turned back, because.. well.. we got bored. Here’s the video (very crappy shot) of what we did see.. Notice that we didn’t even hear the music, just ambulances and helicopters all day.
Maybe next year http://www.streetparade.com
